If there is doubt, it is wrong

Okay students.  It’s time to crack down on  your neatness on your math papers.  I have been spending too much time trying to figure out what numbers are written on papers, and tracking errors that I find are due to sloppy writing.  My new grading policy is going to be this, “If there is doubt, it is wrong“.  Please make sure that your 4’s and 9’s look like 4’s and 9’s (I often see them looking identical).  Same for 1’s and 7’s.  Also, you must line your numbers up neatly to prevent making mistakes.  And can anyone tell me why many students don’t use the lines on your paper to “set” your numbers on?    I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen little things like this lead up to errors when you calculate answers.  Slow down, write neatly, and you will avoid many careless mistakes!
