T.G.I.F.

Finally, we finished with the practice Achievement tests.  Although I get aggravated with the schedule disruption, the practice Achievement tests are a valuable tool.  Not only do they give students a feel for what their tests will be like, but it also gives us (the teachers) a better picture of strengths and weaknesses with our students.  Testing will be here before we know it!

I am AMAZED at how the fifth graders have taken on the World Maths Day challenge!  They have been getting on the computer at every possible opportunity to compete.  I can’t think of a better way to work on their math fluency!  Keep practicing!  I’ll give an update on new numbers soon.

Have a great weekend.  GO BRAVES!

A Fun Challenge

The World Maths Day challenge has continued to be a hit in our class.  I can’t believe how eager students are to get online and work math problems!  We have many more students who have reached the 600 club and many who have now reached over 1000!

600+ Club:  Shaylee Payne, Brandon Cradlebaugh, Heather Rutter, Branden McNichols, Kaylee McNichols and Kate Ricketts. (and many who are very close-keep working!)

1000+ Club:  Shawn Winland, Tyler Bristol, Josh Johnson, Ian Lear, and Dalton Phillips

2000+ Club:  Hannah Caudill

3000+ Club:  Jacob Allison

WOW!  That’s a lot of math!

*Note:  I have heard several of you say that your brother/sister wants to join in the challenge.  You CAN register on your own.  However, if you would like to help contribute to Laurelville Elementary’s total, I can register you in as a class for Laurelville.   You would still get to practice, your numbers would not affect the results that I view of my fifth graders, and your total numbers would be added under Laurelville.  If you would like to get a brother or sister registered, just let me know and I will get you a user name and password.

What a day!

Whew!  I am exhausted today.  It’s amazing to me that the STUDENTS have been taking achievement tests all morning (and some finishing in the afternoon 🙂 ) and I am the one who is exhausted.  I know it can’t possibly be due to the age difference 😉 so it must be due to the fact that I have spent each morning working on getting students caught up on make-up work!  We have had so many students absent a day here, a day there, that I decided that we would take yesterday and today to give those students time to get caught up.

Students, please remember that IF you are absent, you ARE missing something.  In addition to any worksheets that may be given, you may be missing notes that we have taken in our Math notebooks, Coach pages that we have worked on together, Study Island lessons or Daily Math Review problems.   These things don’t show up on engrade, so you need to make sure that you check with me on any of these so that you can get completely caught up.

On a brighter note, our fifth graders have been working hard on the World Maths Day practice!    Jacob Allison is leading the way.  He has correctly answered 2881 questions already!  Many students have reached the 600 club.  They are:  Hannah Hopkins, Eric Deluse, Karly Hart, Tyler Bristol, Kaytlyn Banks, Shawn Winland, Josh Johnson, Jacob Parker, Ian Lear and Dalton Phillips.  Keep practicing so that we may be a part of this world-wide event next week!

Are YOU healthy?

If your answer to this question is “yes”, then consider yourself one of the lucky ones!  It seems that Laurelville has been hit with a number of different bugs recently.  We have had a high number of students (and teachers) absent last week and today.  I told my classes today to remember one word-SOAP!  I reminded all of them to wash their hands, wash their hands, and wash their hands!  Hopefully, those of you who are sick will have a speedy recovery and those who have not been sick will stay healthy!

Today we reviewed squares and square roots.  We also worked on rounding decimals and fractions.

Congratulations to all the fifth and sixth graders who went on the skating trip last Friday.  I heard you all had a great time and there were only a few bruises 😉 to show for your skating efforts!  A HUGE thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this trip that rewarded students who have done their job exceptionally well for the first semester!

More Important than Math

Tonight I sat down at my computer to type my post about what we did in Math class today.  When I logged on to my computer, an article caught my attention on yahoo.  I read the article.  Since I’m the type of person who cries at Hallmark commercials, I was a little teary-eyed after reading the article.  I couldn’t help thinking that in the whole scheme of things, the message in this story is SO more important than what we did in Math class today.  Please read the article, Rare Act of Sportsmanship.  The young men in this article truly understand what is important. And it’s not basketball, and it’s not math!  The reading teacher is coming out of me now.  What do you think is the most important message of the article?

Fractions

Today we continued with simplifying fractions.  We have been working with reducing fractions to lowest terms.  Students worked in groups to complete the first assignment.  When they were finished, their papers were checked.  Any missed problems had to be corrected before they moved on to their Coach page.  When they finished their Coach page, they worked on the Study Island lesson on Ratio and Percent Models.  Students who completed all of their work were able to challenge other students on tutpup.  They have really enjoyed this challenge!

Thanks, Cody, for the dark chocolate this morning.  It was a great mid-morning snack!  And, Katie, I’m enjoying the M&Ms now!  Thanks!

Intervention

As we are quickly approaching April and the dreaded test week, the staff at Laurelville have been frantically thinking of ways that we can get intervention to those students who need some extra help with their school work.  Mrs. Blubaugh has been working with students for a couple of months now during their study hall and library times, and sometimes during recess.  Now that we are getting closer to the testing, we are taking a little more aggressive approach towards intervention.  The fifth and sixth grade teachers have invited students who we feel just need a little more extra work to come to a before school Intervention Study Table.

I have also announced to my math students that I will be taking advantange of Mrs. Blubaugh to work with students, as needed, during their recess time.  We move very quickly in Math class, as you have already noticed.  When students have been absent and have missed direct instruction, meeting with Mrs. Blubaugh may be the best approach to getting them caught up on what they have missed.  I will also be sending students to her for intervention if I notice that they just are not “getting it” and need some more one-on-one assistance.  Assigning students to intervention is NOT meant as a punishment, but rather a time to give them some more direct help in needed areas so they can be more successful in their school work.

Around the World-Literally!

Today we took the traditional Math game “Around the World” to a new level!   I had the students register in my class at tutpup.  This is such a fun web site that makes you realize how close we really are to others in the world via computers and the internet!  They had a lot of fun creating their “screen name” and competing against students from around the world (and within our own class) with Math problems.  What a great way to get them to practice their math skills! 🙂  And FYI, anyone can join the fun at this web site.  I just had my students join in my class so that I can keep track of their progress.  This is really a great site for any age level to practice their math skills and learn a little geography, also!
