Counting Down!

Just a reminder that June 4 is our last day of school.  That means that we have only FOUR days of school remaining.  The last few days are sure to be fun-filled and will go very quickly!  Coming up this week is the PTO sponsored Fun Day and Family Picnic Day on Tuesday.  (Picnic is from 12-1).  The awards ceremony is also scheduled for Wednesday morning.

We have had many fun activities in the past week.  On Friday, all of the students of Laurelville Elementary walked around town for our Relay for Life.  So far, Laurelville Elementary students have raised OVER $2000 for cancer!!  WOW!  And the money is still coming in!

Fifth graders were also invited to watch the 6th graders pariticipate in their DARE graduation and awards ceremony.   They will be attending sixth grade camp at Camp Oty’Okwa Monday through Wednesday-something they have been looking forward to with great anticipation!  Camp is a great experience  and a culmination of their elementary experience.  Our sixth graders have completed their elementary years at Laurelville 🙁 and will be moving on to McDowell in the fall. We will surely miss them, but we wish them the best!  Fifth graders, I know it’s hard to believe, but that will be YOU before you know it!

Let’s have a GREAT last four days of school! 🙂

A Warm Week!

You can tell that the end of school is near-the classrooms at Laurelville Elementary are getting warmer (88° today in my classroom) and students and teachers are getting restless!   The count down is on-8 days of school left!

This week in Math class, the students were introduced to the calculator that they will begin to use next year in the 6th grade.  On Monday, Miss Cookson did a great lesson to introduce the calculator.  The students also had the opportunity to practice using the calculator on some math skills that we worked on this year (adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and order of operations).  We have also been working on multiplying decimals.

Remember, Monday is  Memorial Day-NO School!

Enjoy the holiday!

Relay for Life

Last year, Laurelville Elementary students participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.  Laurelville Elementary raised more money for cancer research than any other school in Pickaway County.  The sixth graders are again coordinating Laurelville’s efforts to raise money for cancer.  Today all students at Laurelville received a pledge envelope to begin getting donations.  As part of their fundraising efforts, the sixth graders are selling cancer stars in the cafeteria.  These $1 stars can be purchased in memory of or in honor of loved ones who have been victims of this disease.  VanCuren’s Graphics are also selling Relay for Life t-shirts for $10.  Half of that amount will be donated back to the cancer society.  Each student is encouraged to raise money for the Relay for Life.  Any student who collects ANY amount of money will particpate in  Laurelville’s own Relay for Life walk on May 29.  Please help our students in their efforts to raise  money for the fight against cancer!

Earth Day at Laurelville

Today the students at Laurelville celebrated Earth Day.  This day is officially celebrated on April 22.  However, our students were in the middle of testing week, so we postponed our activities until this week.   All grade levels participated in activities today to help improve our portion of the Earth here in Laurelville.  Some of the activities that our students performed around our community were:  planting flowers, pulling weeds (hopefully not too many flowers 😉 ) spreading mulch, picking up litter around our school and at our ball diamonds, and spreading wood chips along our nature trail and in our land lab.  Way to go, Laurelville students!  Our community looks much better!

Hooked on Fishing!

The fifth grade students enjoyed a great day today at Tar Hollow State Park.  The weather turned out to be beautiful.  The students took part in a stream study, a nature hike, and did some fishing.  The fish weren’t that hungry, but a few students did manage to catch a fish.  PTO also provided the fifth graders with an ice cream treat from L & J’s when we returned to town.  Thanks, once again, to our great PTO! 🙂

A GREAT Week!

What a great week this has been!  On Tuesday, the Laurelville Staff enjoyed a fabulous lunch provided by our PTO.  The food was delicious.  THANK YOU to all parents who helped provide us with such a feast!  🙂  On Wednesday, the students enjoyed the Inflatables.  Again, courtesy of our PTO!  The students really had a great time with them.  Thanks, also, to those who helped support our PTO fundraiser by either selling or buying items.  Without their fundraising efforts, events like the inflatables would never happen!

And last, but definitely NOT least, the students of Laurelville enjoyed watching a great basketball game this afternoon.  Sixth grade students  (Corbit Cartee, Lily West, Seth Reffitt, Seth Roberts, Trindi Barnes, Colton Weekly, Desire VanCuren, and Colin Hettinger) earned the chance to take on some Laurelville staff members (Mrs. Scott, Miss Cookson, Mrs. Cartee, Mr. McGuire, Miss Fraley, Mr. Dropsey, and Mr. Congrove).  What fun that was!  Congratulations to the victorious 6TH GRADERS!

Have a great weekend!

Normal. . . (I think!)

Testing is officially over at Laurelville Elementary.  All of the tests have been boxed and shipped off to Scoring Land to have someone determine if our students are proficient or not.  We had great attendance during the test weeks (Thank you!), so we were able to get make-up testing completed in a timely manner.

Now that testing is behind us, we are trying to get back into a “normal” schedule.  However, we also have many fun activities in this last month to look forward to.  We have the inflatables and a basketball game (between 6th graders and some staff members) this week and our fifth grade field trip next week, to name a few.  I am sure that these last few weeks of school will go by very quickly! 🙂
