Using a Lotus

We began reviewing for our Geometry test today.  The students worked in groups to complete a Lotus Diagram on key words and concepts for each indicator that we have covered so far this year.  This was a great activity and the groups did a fabulous job, especially 5A!   We will do some more reviewing tomorrow and the test will be on Wednesday!

Test Coming Soon!

This week we have been working on the last indicators for Geometry.  We have been discussing the properties of congruent figures and today we began constructing 3-D figures from nets.  Since we are finishing our work on the Geometry strand, we will be having a test next week.  The test will cover everything that we have worked on so far this year!  We will review for a couple of days and the test will be on Wednesday!

On Monday of this week, each fifth grade student was given an account to practice math problems on IXL.  This is an internet math site that I found last year and I really like it!  It gives the students unlimited amount of practice problems for over 240 skills in fifth grade alone!  We also have access to other grades and we have been using those to review some basic adding and subtracting.  The students seem to really enjoy it.  They like getting the “prizes” for mastering skills!

Kudos!

stustar Kudos to Rhianna L. in my homeroom ! At the end of the day, a student dropped all of her books in the hall.  I watched as 17 students either stepped right past her, over her, or even laughed at her. 🙁  However, there was ONE student who took the time to lend a hand-Rhianna!  What a great job, Rhianna!  I know that act of kindness runs in the family, as I have had Rhianna’s brother and sister as students and they were always quick to lend a hand, also.

That’s something for many of you to think about.  When you see others in need, what do you do?   Laugh?  Ignore it?  Pretend you didn’t notice?  Or do you offer help?

Grandfriends are Great!

Today was the Grandfriend’s Day Picnic at Laurelville Elementary. What an absolutely beautiful day to welcome our grandfriends to come and dine with their grandchildren! We certainly could not have asked for more perfect weather. It is always so exciting for our children and the staff at Laurelville to have so many wonderful guests. I hope all that were able to attend enjoyed themselves.

Getting into the groove?

Well, this has been the first full week of the school year.  Most fifth grade students are getting into the groove of being fifth graders and all of the responsibility that it involves.   Fifth grade is a year of many changes for the students as they are asked to be more independent and responsible for themselves.  It is a difficult transition for many.  How do you think your child  is doing in the fifth grade? Please talk with them and see what they think of their school year so far.  If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to let us know so we can help!

All students (and parents) are able to check  grades now on engrade.   Some students are still learning how missing assignments affect their grades.  Please check your child’s grades and assignment books on a regular basis!

This week in Math class we have been working on plotting points on a coordinate plane.  We also started talking about different parts of a circle. One of the skills that fifth graders need to do is to find the circumference of a circle. The circumference of a circle = Π x diameter.   To review for this, we reviewed multiplication today of 2 and 3-digit numbers by 1 and 2-digit numbers.  Several students had difficulty with this, even though it was worked on in the fourth grade.  Please check with your child and see if they can correctly multiply larger numbers.

I hope to see many grandfriends tomorrow for our annual Grandfriends Day Picnic!

Fun, fun

After a nice, long weekend, fifth grade students in the Logan Elm School District started taking the CoGat and Iowa tests. Laurelville students will be taking these tests during their Language Arts period on Tuesday and Thursday, and during their Math period on Wednesday and Friday.  They will finish up on Monday by taking the Iowa tests for Science and Social studies in those classes.

Since we will only actually have two days of “Math” class, we will be working only on one indicator.  This week we will be working on finding the missing angle measurement of triangles and quadrilaterals. After testing today, fifth grade students enrolled in engrade.  This is an online gradebook that will allow students and parents to check grades at any time from any computer.  This is a great communication tool that is used by all 5th/6th grade teachers at Laurelville.

Into the Groove!

Well, we have been back to school for a week now and the fifth graders are really getting into the groove of things on the top floor!  We have continued working on routines and expectations and this week we have been working on our math class routine.

On Monday, fifth grade students registered for an account on tutpup.  On this web site, they can practice basic math skills by competing with other students in a timed game.  Sometimes that student may be in our classroom, but often it is a student in another country!  They have been very excited about this challenge.  We will be practicing our speed in order to prepare for the World Math Day Challenge!

We also began our unit on Geometry this week.  Our focus this week is on Geometry indicators #2 and #3 (please see my  Math W.A.G. page for details).  We have been working in our Coach books, taking notes, doing some classwork assignments and have worked on the first Study Island assignment for math.

Fifth graders REALLY got into the groove today when we sang and danced in math class!  I was very impressed with all three classes as they learned a song to help them remember the difference between parallel and perpendicular lines! Great job!
