Woo Hoo!

A huge THANK YOU to the Salt Creek Banking Center salt_creek_bankingin Laurelville.  A representative from the bank called our principal, Mrs. Scott, this morning to ask if they could help our fifth graders celebrate our World Maths Day success!  This afternoon, John and Shelly brought each fifth grader (and teachers!) ice cream to congratulate them on the number of math problems (253,881) that were answered in just TWO days!   THANK YOU, Salt Creek Banking Center, for once again showing your support of Laurelville Elementary students!

Day Two…

Well, the big event is over and Laurelville students ended World Maths Day with a total of 253,881 questions answered!  For fifty students in just two days….WOW!  AMAZING!

I am so proud of the fifth grade students and their efforts.  Each morning we had a room full of students who arrived early (as early as 7:00am!) and we had another room full each evening!  The students had fun competing with students from around the world and each other in 60 second timed math contests.

Parents donated PLENTY of food, snacks, and drinks to see us through the two days!  I lost track of who all sent in items, so I’d like to just give a huge THANKS to all who parents who made special arrangements to have your child here to put in extra time and to all who sent in goodies.  I appreciated your support!

We couldn’t have reached such high numbers, either, without Mrs. Stevenson and Mr. McGuire’s support.  Mrs. Stevenson donated her Language Arts time for students to continue with the event and Mr. McGuire and his 6th graders graciously switched classrooms with us so that we would have computers that worked for the event.  Mrs. Walters also supported ME by providing me with a Milky Way cappucino each afternoon!  😉

All-in-all, I consider our efforts to be a huge success, even though we didn’t get in the top 50 like I had hoped.  Fifth graders still went beyond my expectations, so I WILL be providing them with a pizza party!  GREAT JOB!

Day One…

Wow…….wow, wow, wow!  Day one of World Maths Day was amazing!  We had students arriving at 7:00am and students staying until 7:00pm (and some did BOTH!)  Parents sent in snacks and drinks, and Austin’s parents event brought a pizza for those who stayed through dinner.   Students worked hard throughout the day and by 7:00pm last night, our students had answered 120,613 math problems!  And already this morning, we have a room full at 7:30 in the morning!  Who would have thought that kids would actually volunteer to put in extra hours doing math!?  🙂
