Math Around the World….

Today we had a “Fun Fact Friday”!  Knowing basic math skills like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are critical for a student to be successful in math.  Unfortunately, due to the material that I am required to teach fifth grade students, we don’t get to spend too much time in math class reviewing these basics.  (Any help at home would be greatly appreciated!:) )  Occasionally though, we will have Fun Fact Friday-a day when we will review basic math skills in a fun way!

Today the students enrolled in Tutpup.  This is an online program where students can compete with other students from around the world in a math game of speed!  They were practicing their math skills in a friendly competition!  Hopefully, this will help them with their basic facts…and also learn a little geography in the process!  : )

IXL is a HIT!

Our wonderful PTO purchased an IXL license for the fifth graders to practice Math.  Wow…it has been a huge hit!  Fifth graders have already answered over 15,000 math problems! I have had several students asking to get on IXL at home.  Hhmm…students ASKING to DO MATH!  What more could a math teacher ask for?  I can’t thank PTO enough!  If you see a PTO officer, be sure to thank them for getting IXL for us.

We have been working on the Geometry strand so far in Math class this year.  We have also been doing some reviewing of math skills.  I have had several parents wanting to give their children extra math practice at home….that is awesome!  🙂  Are you wondering what you can do to help your child be successful in math?  My suggestion would be to help them with the basics.  Any review of basic math facts, addition or multiplication, would be a tremendous help.  Also, since we are working on geometry, any discussion you can have with your child about shapes, angles, and circles and connecting them to real-life would be helpful.  🙂
