Teamwork

The fifth graders are beginning to get  into the groove of things already!  Today in Math class we set up our math binders and notebooks.  I also explained my expectations for math class.  One thing that I emphasize all year is working together to help each other out.  I will be telling students all year long to “use your resources”.  In our class, one of those resources may be a classmate.  To introduce students to the concept of teamwork, they were given a challenge today.  Each class had to arrange themselves in order of their birthdays-WITHOUT TALKING!  To encourage them, I timed them and the class with the lowest time earned an extra recess.  Congratulations to Mrs. Cartee’s homeroom. They completed the activity in 10 minutes, 23 seconds.  Good job!  They worked well as a team and will get an extra recess tomorrow!

A Great Start!

luvskoolWe had a terrific first day of fifth grade (at least the teachers think so)!  As usual the first day is a lot of figuring out what to do and when to do it, and where to put all that stuff.  Most of the students came with all of the supplies they need, and some with extra!  Thank you for making sure that your child has all that he/she needs for the school year!

In math class today, I wanted to focus on getting to know each other a little better.  We did an M & M activity where the students had to tell some things about themselves based on how many M & Ms they chose.  Those who chose more M & Ms had to tell more about themselves!  I learned that I have a lot of students who love chocolate!  🙂  We also did a math activity-What’s My Number?-where students had to figure out their number by asking their classmates yes or no questions.  Two of the classes were also able to start reviewing their facts by playing “Bonk the Moles” on the computer.  Other than it getting pretty warm by afternoon, it was an overall great day!

15 Rules for Living

At the end of this past school year, I found this list in Molly’s class folder.  Her third grade teacher, Ms. Martin, had shared it with her students.  I think these rules are pretty good ones, so I thought I would post this on the blog for anyone to read.  (Thanks, Ms. Martin 🙂 )

Golden Rules for Living

*If you open it, close it.

*If you turn it on, turn it off.

*If you unlock it, lock it up.

*If you break it, admit it.

*If you can’t fix it, call someone who can.

*If you borrow it, return it.

*If you value it, take care of it.

*If you make a mess, clean it up.

*If you move it, put it back.

*If it belongs to someone else and you want to use it, get permission.

*If you don’t know how to operate it, leave it alone.

*If it’s none of your business, don’t ask questions.

*If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.

*If it will brighten someone’s day, say it.

*If it will tarnish someone’s reputation, keep it to yourself.

Remodeling for New School Year!

underconstbar

The 2009-2010 school year is just around the corner.  I hope all of you have had a great summer and are eagerly anticipating the start of another school year.  I am gradually preparing myself to get back into “school” mode.   Pages and links will be disappearing as I make changes to the blog to prepare for a new group of students and a new school year.  Remember, school starts August 26!
